چکیده

INTRODUCTION The Rn(radon) family is the most significant source of exposure to natural radiation, causing about one-half of the public effective dose. A number of international organizations, including UNSCEAR (United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) and ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) have officially reported this fact since the 1980’s (1-6). Radon and its progeny concentrations have been surveyed all over the world. Important nuclides in the radon family contributing to the effective dose are members of the radon short-life progeny. (Here, radon progeny indicates radon short-life progeny, that is, Po to Po.) Therefore, direct measurement of the progeny concentration is adequate for dosimetry. However, it is difficult to survey the radon progeny concentrations in large numbers of ordinary dwellings or offices because of a lack of convenient measurement instruments. Therefore, radon dosimetry has been based on the concentration of the parent radon itself. For a precise calculation of the public or personal effective dose, a facile and portable radon progeny monitor is greatly needed. In the present study, a portable radon progeny monitor (PRPM) was designed and developed which automatically estimates the individual progeny concentration in the natural environment.

Integrating Radon Progeny Monitor

INTRODUCTION The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) carried out research and development projects related to uranium exploration in Japan from 1967 to 1987. Several mining facilities have been retained after the end of projects. Hence, the study on the behavior and the environmental impact of radon and its progeny from the mining facilities is being continued at the Ningyo-toge Env...

Calculating CR-39 Response to Radon in Water Using Monte Carlo Simulation

Introduction CR-39 detectors are widely used for Radon and progeny measurement in the air. In this paper, using the Monte Carlo simulation, the possibility of using the CR-39 for direct measurement of Radon and progeny in water is investigated. Materials and Methods Assuming the random position and angle of alpha particle emitted by Radon and progeny, alpha energy and angular spectrum that arri...

A study on radon and thoron progeny levels in dwellings in South India

Background: Decay products of radon and thoron present in indoor environment are the most important sources of radiation from natural sources which affect human beings, since general public spend at lest 80% of their time in indoor. Materials and Methods: Air samples were collected for measuring the concentration of radon and thoron daughter products from various indoor environments d...

Measurements of indoor radon, thoron and their progeny in Farrukhabad city of Uttar Pradesh, India

Background: More than 50% of the total dose received by human beings from all sources of radiation (both from natural and manmade) comes from radon and its progeny which is responsible for lung cancer in many cases. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the measurements have been carried out by using twin chamber dosimeter cups with LR-115 type-II detectors. The value of track ...
